Englischer Bailey King, co-owner of the Amish candy shop Swissmen Sweets, is stunned when the normally confident, unflappable community organizer Margot Rawlings is in a tizzy due the impending visit of her mother, Zara Bevan. Zara, a retired judge, is an overly critical mother and, as a judge, tended to sentence Amish defendants harshly. When Zara's much younger fiancé, Blaze Smith, dies from an allergic reaction to peanuts, both Margot and Zara ask Bailey to investigate, as they fear Margot will be a suspect. In addition to working at her store during the busy Black Friday weekend, Bailey interviews numerous suspects, ultimately identifying the killer and motive. Details of running a candy shop and the lovingly described Holmes County, Ohio, Amish setting frame a satisfying story in which Bailey must also deal with her unease about the strength of her long-distance relationship with lawman Aiden Brody and her desire to expand her shop. Plenty of humor and the cast of quirky characters, including a miniature pig, enliven this cozy.
