Lucille's grandmother, Sylvie, has a job for her: go to Paris, and track down a dress. Lucille finds Veronique, who has been holding on to a collection of Dior couture gowns, all marked with a small embroidered "A & A," but two are missing. In 1953, Alice Ainsley is in a loveless marriage with Albert, a high-ranking British diplomat in Paris. She attends her first fashion show, and soon she is wearing Dior to host parties at the residence, like the one where she meets Antoine du Parcq. Soon Antoine and Alice are embroiled in an affair, but she can't keep anything hidden from Albert, even with the help of her beloved maid, Anne. Back in the present, Lucille finds the clues to the missing dresses with the help of Veronique and Leon, the handsome grandson of a secondhand shop owner, but one dress remains elusive. Alternating between Alice's seemingly glamorous life and Lucille's search, Beer peels back layers of the story slowly, keeping readers guessing. For fans of fabulous historical settings with a modern parallel narrative.
